Helicopters All Around! Cool

Well Saturday I decided to get some solo time in, while it was a good day and no one had the airplane for the time I wanted to fly.I know right I finally got to fly SURPRISING! I’m not going to sit here and lie, I have been very frustrated with the way this whole ending my Private Pilot License thing has gone. The weather in Ohio is just plain poopy and for a student pilot looking to get solo time in Ohio’s winds, they aren’t in their favor.

I got to the airport and saw so many aircraft either in the pattern, taxing or getting pre flighted so I knew I needed to be extra careful in the pattern that day (Thank god I was). So after I got done pre flighting the aircraft and finished some hanger talk with a aviation friend who was at the airport, I was ready to go flying. O wait the person before decided to leave me with the low tanks so I had to go fill her up. Although not a hassle, getting fuel was just another thing to put off my flying a bit longer. But anyway finally I got to the runway and was holding with a Baron I believe doing my run-up. I figured it would take me longer so he just went and took off before. Then I was ready for departure. I let a nice little RV-8 land and then back taxied runway 25.

Earlier in the day!

With a quick advancement of the throttle I flew down the run way and lifted off at 55 knots. Ya I was in the air once again! So I flew the pattern a couple times and heard on frequency a helicopter inbound for my airport. He asked where he should land, at this point you don’t really know the size of the heli but I told him that I usually see helicopters landing on the apron. And low and behold that’s where he took his huge Eurocopter I believe.

Eurocopter?

That was but the most exciting thing of the day. I don’t know what it is with my airport but some people seem to think it is a smart idea to fly pattern altitude en-route right in the pattern where I was flying. Luckily I have a good eye and keep my eyes outside the aircraft so I didn’t run into the aircraft flying from right to left on my downwind [Frustration]. After that little situation I decided to land the good ol’ Cessna and call it a day.

Bell Jetranger Landing

I always find it so weird the joy I get out of helicopters because I fly airplanes, now yes they are both aircraft but I truly think it takes a certain type of person to fly helicopters and I never really thought about flying them. One because of the cost of training is just that much more, but I think it would be cool don’t get me wrong. I now officially put it on my Bucket List and hope someday to achieve it as an “Add-On Rating”. I would appreciate comments by other pilots that either have their helicopter license or have both airplane and helicopter I would be very interested to hear what you have to say about that.

Lastly, I always finish with current news about my website in its entirety. First expect one of my best podcast yet that will feature an interview with the founder of NYCAviation.com yes you got it Plane Spotting! I recently bought a DSLR camera to begin the fun hobby of plane spotting and in the podcast he will help all you out there on how to get started if your wanting to get into the hobby. Also I will talk a bit about my check ride coming up and it will have details of my Live Show in June. (Date still pending). Also expect some final changes to the look and interactivity of the website by July that will make this website stand out from the rest. Finally I would like to thank all my readers and listeners out there that have been with me through this fun and tough journey, Thanks.

Until Next Time,

Pilot Ian

Happy Landings!

Well Ian I just got back from the checkride. I PASSED!!! I am officially a private pilot now. Don't worry about the oral and checkride. You seem to be exactly like me with aviation, a strong passion for it. Trust me you have nothing to worry about. Keep your head high, and keep on flying. Thats all it takes to get it. Sometimes you just need to take a step back, relax, and remember why you did this to begin with. Goodluck on the rest of your training, keep with updates, and see you in the skies!

Thanks for the advice and congrats on passing!!!!!!!! Ill keep updating and Until Next Time,

  • @Connall Yes I love looking at youtube videos of heli's doing sweet stuff and I want to get into RC stuff someday. Thanks for the comment

@Jon Thats how it has been going for me the weather is just putting my chackride and solo time off and off longer but I do realize it is a process its just been to long for me. Thanks for readin my blog, dont forget to subscribe.

@ Josh it was a interesting flight and sorta disliked it because of the aircraft en-route in pattern altitude but o well i guess :(.

    Keep on reading!
    Until Next Time,

Love the view!!! Just one problem Ian... What's up with those stupid helicopters :) Looks like a interesting flight!

Don't get to frustrated I have been their and done that. I was originally supposed to take my checkride on April 8th and had a delay. Then this previous saturday the 15th I went up to the airport met with the examiner and began the checkride. An issue came up with the plane so I had to postpone it again. I'm finally scheduled for the checkride tomorrow and should be taking it. I got disappointed because I wanted to have my license sometime when I was 17 and I just turned 18 last week. Just keep your head high, take a deep breath, and keep on flying. It will come together if you work hard enough.

Well Ian what can I say, such an interesting flight. On the subject of heli's, I got into them about a year and a half ago and have a few RC models which take some time to learn to fly, I don't mean those little toys, but the ones that'll take your head off if your not careful, I am just fascinated by them, but they defy the laws of physics as they beat the air into submission in order to fly. I would love to learn to fly them rather than any winged aircraft, but as you said it is a more expensive route. Have a look on you tube at some pilots performing auto-rotations, awsome.
