I was looking at aviation apps for my iPhone recently and too many peoples surprise there a good amount of them to try out. Of course many pilots have heard of the more popular ForeFlight app for the iPhone/iPad but today I am going to talk about a similar one, The Garmin Pilot My-Cast Weather and Flight Planning app. Let me start off by saying, that using any map/planning app on an iPhone already puts you at somewhat of a disadvantage with the small screen. If you are looking to have a mobile device to read charts, have a mobile AF/D (Airport Facility Directory), or just have to follow yourself in the air. Then I would recommend buying the “bigger iPod” the iPad. Just like things in aviation, the bigger the better.
Back to the review, At first glance I would tell any Instrument or Private pilot to try out the 30 day free trial. Currently I am on the 30 day free trial of this app and am trying to decide whether it’s worth renewing a subscription. At a healthy price point of $99.99/yearly it makes it more expensive than the Foreflight that is only $74.95/yearly for their base package. So what does Pilot My-Cast have that Foreflight doesn’t? That’s a tough question to answer because they are very similar in their attributes. As for bang for your buck, ForeFlight will have the edge on Pilot My-Cast.
Pilot My-Cast provides the pilot with multiple types of displays of your flight. From just regular flight path on a map you can have weather displayed via Radar, cloud coverage, Winds Aloft, Lightning, and much more! The second most important page you can go to is the “Flight Plan” page. On this page you can plan your whole route from Departure airport to Arrival airport, while it displays vital weather information about your airports and fixes so you can account for it and plan accordingly. Once you’re done with the planning there is no fear of having to even leave the app to call in your flight plan. Just press the “FAA Filing” button and it does it right then and there. If that’s not your forte just press the “Call FSS (Flight Service Station)” button.
Yet another page is the “AOPA Info” page that displays any airport you would need while flying. When you find your airport in this mobile AF/D It will show all the information about runways, phone numbers, Navigational Aids, and other general information. Also one vital thing this page provides is the ability to open up Approach Charts for the airports runways! Then of course the last page is for general settings to customize your name, airplane etc…
In Closing after looking at this app and trying it out, while it is a great app and has great things to offer to the pilot in the cockpit and while planning. I do think that at $99.99 a year its a bit pricey for what your getting. I would much rather save the extra 25 bucks and buy the very well known ForeFlight App for now. I can venture to guess that eventually Pilot My-Cast will have to lower their price point to contend with the ever so popular ForeFlight App. But only you can decide which one is best for you so I recommend trying out both of these apps 30 free trial!
Until Next Time,
